I found his style pretty dry, with lots of names and dates and quotations from primary sources, which is fine, but I have trouble imagining that a kid would find this a particularly engaging text. The larger the number read on the meter display, the darker the sky.

As I devour Black Lives Matter books - I saw this non-fiction book on display and knew I needed to read it to be better informed about the Reconstruction (or lack of) and Jim Crow laws. With its uncensored telling of black history from the Civil War Era to Jim Crow, I learned so much.
