Ms. Ikoko is currently at work on her third play, for the National Theatre, and is developing a movie for the BBC. Thoroughly researched and far ranging, David Olusoga's book is topical, necessary, and provides an overview of a neglected element of British history, as well as being essential reading for the contemporary debate about the role (or even existence) of black people in Britain throughout the ages. From many white British perspectives, being Black in America seems far worse than being Black in the U.K. In a program she worked on that organized drama workshops in London prisons, she started to see the power of storytelling — and whose stories got to be told. It wasn’t until last year, when she couldn’t get the time off work to attend the “Rocks” premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, that she decided she could no longer do both.

By bringing together these disparate and diverse voices, this film helps to build on the community of black Scots and passes on a legacy not only to Yasmin and other young black and mixed-race Scots, but also the wider Scottish community.

Though our representation has grown, we still have a long way to go compared to U.S. and as my experience with problematic representation their shows, we can’t rely solely on media to fix racism.
