Upped resolution and improved audio and tracking are impressive, but for a headset that’s twice the price of its nearest rival, the lack of obvious changes is disappointing. Swing a racket behind your head, or crisscross your swords—moves at all angles are quick and smooth. By all accounts it’s a very capable headset that’s more than good enough for gamers and developers alike. NVIDIA 1440 x 1700 pixels per eye (2880 x 1700 pixels combined), USB 3.0 (or later), DP 1.2, Proprietary Connection to Faceplates, Intel 2. When you talk about performance with the HTC Vive Cosmos, you now need to specify which faceplate you’re using – a quirk that no other headset has, for both better and worse. That resolution is higher than both the Valve Index (2880 x 1600) and higher than the Oculus Rift S (2560 x 1440), which means you really don’t notice the screen door effect at all. Both versions use the same 2880 x 1700 resolution LCD display and halo-style headband, but the front faceplate swaps out to allow you to jump from one set of capabilities to another.

The Vive Cosmos and Vive Cosmos Elite are the latest VR headsets from HTC and offer a modular experience that lets you upgrade from one to the other. For starters, before you even begin, you’ll need a fairly powerful gaming PC.

When it was released late last year, the HTC Vive Cosmos was in a sorry state. It’s inaccurate any time your hands go too far to your sides or behind your back, and there’s a rubber banding effect that happens when your controllers re-enter the field of view, making it hard to play games where constant tracking is crucial. Well, they’re pretty sharp on the 3K screen.

Even though it uses the original Vive’s controllers and lighthouse base stations, it feels more precise in its tracking and therefore more practical use for most games and apps. Once all the above is achieved, the system will log you into Viveport, to which HTC is offering six months “Infinite” free access, alongside a copy of Half-Life: Alyx, with every Vive Cosmos Elite. If you want better hand-tracking, the Vive Cosmos Elite is available starting on March 16 for $899 (UK and AU price TBD) for the headset and faceplate, or $199 (around £150, AU$299) for just the faceplate that HTC says will be available later on this year once production gets back up to speed post-coronavirus outbreak. The selection doesn’t match Oculus’s offering, but many of the main games are present – outside of a select few exclusives such as Robo Recall, which remains one of the best VR arcade shooters around. View the complete list > This isn’t true of most entry-level VR headsets. The increased resolution works wonders to remove the screen-door effect – where the lines between pixels are visibly noticeable – that plagued early VR headsets. The only difference between it and the regular Cosmos is that it comes with, on paper, improved tracking thanks to a nifty preinstalled faceplate and sensor setup. The beauty of having multiple faceplates is that you can swap them out when a game requires more precise tracking, or if you want to move your setup to another room without having to move the base stations with it. © The headset comes with a hinge design that lets you pop up its front part if you just need to quickly get your bearings while playing. Playing Half-Life: Alyx, I never suffered any serious hand-tracking issues and generally enjoyed a wonderfully immersive VR experience. Where the less precise tracking does work, however, is with games that require your hands to be in front of you at almost all times.

The setup process is fairly laborious, but if you have enough space then room-scaling works a treat; the Vive accurately picked up my movements in my VR play area. The faceplates cost extra – and buying them all will cost you more than if you had bought a single multi-purpose headset right off the bat. For comparison, the Valve Index is one of the more expensive headsets at $999.99 (£919, around AU$1,425), putting it $100 above the complete HTC Vive Cosmos Elite package, while on the lower end the Oculus Rift S comes in at $399 / £399 / AU$649, around $300 less than the standard issue HTC Vive Cosmos. The grip controls work okay, requiring you to squeeze the wands when you want to grip something in VR, for example. Its room-scaling, motion-tracking and general screen resolution are better, which means people in its target market of developers and hardcore PC gamers with cash to burn won’t regret buying the Vive Cosmos Elite. That’s more or less the story of the Cosmos at this time and at this price point – it’s a decent portal into virtual reality, but one that comes with a few caveats. The connector box also needs its own power source, so make sure you have extra outlets or a power strip handy. ft * .

They certainly provided the first-gen Vive with a clear edge over the Oculus, which only worked with Xbox controllers at launch. Like the original Vive, the Cosmos Elite uses wall-mountable base stations called lighthouses that track the controllers and the headset using small tracking divots. It’s a great feature, but I found myself having to regularly refocus the headset every time I used it. All the HMDs in the Vive Cosmos family can be lifted up to see the world around you without having to take the whole headset off – which is great if you're someone who occasionally wants to use the computer in between VR games. Its hand-tracking ability isn’t perfect and its setup process can be hit-or-miss. This, alongside an elongated design, makes them feel less comfortable and immersive than their Oculus rivals. The standard Vive Cosmos saw a fantastic controller upgrade, closely imitating the Oculus Touch. Here's our list of the. With the six-camera tracking faceplate, the Vive Cosmos is a fine, base-tracking-free experience. The space-age environment had nice inky black levels on the headset, and while we could notice some light refraction when we weren’t right in the headset’s sweet spot, it wasn’t too noticeable.

The better resolution of the headset is slightly diminished by the lower-resolution assets in the game, but being able to experience the world Bethesda built in first-person never really gets old.
