During special exhibitions, The African American Museum in Philadelphia displays a large collection of paintings, photographs, prints, drawings, sculptures and mixed-media works that chronicle and dramatically tell the story of the African diaspora. In the 1930s and 40s, over 35,000 posters were created as part of the the government-sponsored Works Progress Administration (WPA) to heighten awareness of community events, health programs, theatrical productions, and other civic issues, as well as to promote travel. The African American Museum in Philadelphia, founded in 1976, is the first institution built by a major U.S. city to preserve, interpret and exhibit the heritage and culture of African-Americans. The upcoming When Women Lost the Vote: A Revolutionary Story, 1776-1807 exhibition at the Museum of the American Revolution chronicles this over 30-year period in the nation’s history. The walls are a tapestry of Blackness and self-expression that range from a casual photo of a smoking James Baldwin to a lively still of Earth, Wind & Fire. Some things, as his exploration of cotton continued, Dowell had never even heard of, particularly when he began thinking about slavery in the north. I just cried.

But the goal of the show, Fawundu adds, isn’t just artist recognition.

The special exhibition features 56 lifelike wax figures including one for every American president and several other influential leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Harriet Tubman. The exhibition features work from throughout Tenggren’s career, including early work for Nordic publishers, and showcases the impact immigrants have had on American art and culture.

Exhibited with them are provocative mixed-media paintings and found-object sculptures by Thornton Dial, Lonnie Holley, and others whose subjects and materials echo with the painful history of the American South and the conditions of life for many who live there.
