Several people, since FF9's release, have criticized Necron with confusion, with lines like "Out-of-nowhere" or "He's symbolic", intent on the idea that he's not an actual character. For example, garland says "You have no idea who you are defying." Yet another thing that makes FFIX stand alone for me. FF9 is designed to be a throwback FF, right? Also he spams Grand Cross so his fight sucks too. He teaches you that the journey matters more than the destination. But I wish they would have foreshadowed him more. Follow me here, if you do all the side quest bs for garnets name and read all the random stuff about maiden sari including the 4 special items like garnets necklace and whatnot you find that the summoner tribe basically destroyed themselves by summoning eidolen they couldn't control and attracting enemies after the power they had. This was Kuja's journey, it was Vivi's journey, even Garland's journey in a way as he was the protector of the Terran civilization that would have rather erased Gaia than allow itself to die. I really don't see how he fits.

Was it really as hard as I remember it? He's an eidolen metaphor. They did the same thing with Zemus/Zeromus in IV. Just because you can't be bothered to look for evidence, doesn't mean there is none!!! I used to be more of "wtf?" Now let's look at how each of the summons you actually find story for like garnet praying for help and getting leviathan or learning the story for raumuh they're all trying to test your heart and represent something else.
Wasn't Necron called Cloud of Darkness or something like that in the Japanese version? I'm guessing Sakaguchi wasn't satisfied with just having Kuja die. If Necron survives long enough to use Grand Cross focus on healing for a moment.

At the end with Kuja the guy running from death you find the crystal all life sprang from and lo and behold he breaks it with ultima and a giant godlike thing comes out...huh a rare gem holding a giant powerful being, where have we heard that? Even ark you fight in a place where weakness is strength in items. My theory was similar. Anyway I liked it. Everyone constantly going on about ff9's "random final boss" is really starting to annoy me. I feel that far too many fights in XI finish in your team getting wiped to 1HP and the foe “winning”. But yeah, kinda personification of the cycles of death and rebirth. as a kid, then I played more jrpg growing up and realize it's pretty much the trope of the genre to feature god-like figure as a final boss. You can avoid some statuses with equipment, but not all of them so be prepared. It is death, it's always there, it's not some mastermind puppet master. I get it for plot purposes, it just is incredibly unsatisfying. The will to live and struggle is the best part if you spend the time avoiding death you miss the best part of life. I couldn't beat it. Also, if it is true that ff1, 7, 9 and 10 are all connected, necron brings a lot to it. Most likely because it was my first FF experience. He's awoken by Kuja's actions but it would have been nice to have seen him "stirring" at … You don't even need to think of this scene as literally happening. Isn't there a fan theory that Necron is supposed to be a part of the Iifa Tree or something? Eternal Darkness would've made the fight make a lot more sense without diving too deep into pretentiousness. It also made sense to me how Garland and Kuja were sort of redeemed in the end. I get what they were going for but I wasn’t a fan.
And he's been a character ever since Disc 2. It's hinted at at certain points during the game, one of them being the Iifa tree. The game doesn’t really reference Death as an actual entity. I didn't even realize that he appeared because Kuja had destroyed the crystal just before. It was out of nowhere but I didn’t mind it. Can't believe people are really doing the 'iI you didn't like Necron, you're just stupid and can't understand themes' thing lol. I would have preferred the final boss to be Hades like it seems they originally intended though. His similar to Zeromus in how he comes out of nowhere. A challenging fight, but this was definitely an FF with underwhelming boss encounters. You kinda know something else is coming at that point of the game. All of them either appeared out of nowhere at the last second or else 'mutated' from the primary antagonist.
Lol wait, the new defense of Necron now is that plenty of other FF final bosses were out of nowhere asspulls? Thematically appropiate, but still came out of nowhere and should've been hinted at during the game. FFIX is my favorite FF entry in the series, hands down. Necron never bothered me a bit in this game - even in my first playthrough he made sense to me. People say he came out of nowhere. But he is. By that point I was lukewarm on the game overall, so it didn't make a difference to me one way or the other. There have been worse FF bosses (imo) since then but at the time I was hugely disappointed. THANKS. But whether the scene happens or not, let's try to look at the content of the scene just from the clues we get. And what is necron's lesson? I like how Kuja isn't the final boss, because he gets something of a redemption at the end. He still comes out of nowhere though. To be honest i dont believe oldschool final fantasies final bosses were that asspulled as necron, considering Chaos is garland in a time loop, the emperor dies and becomes king of hell but he is still the same person, zemus gets enough story to atleast make sense, Exdeath is an very similar position to the emperor. Probably should have been mentioned somewhere beforehand, but it fits the game thematically so it's not a huge issue for me. Chaos to a lesser degree in the first game too I think. was really behind it all, so you get this final boss, because you just HAVE to face some kind of god as a final boss in these games.
Given how laser-focused IX is on its themes and its regular forays into heightened storytelling it really works for me. Most of the characters in the game go through it. Idk what you're gonna hint to about Necron.
