gareth liddiard interview

Think about Jeffery Dalmer or Hitler and what they did. How has this shaped you?

Which people aren’t doing. Five Years Later: The Best Films of 2014!!

In a Liddiard song, all is interrelated: the homely seethes with public tensions, and the public is coloured by private dispositions. …, Stevens’ muddled but majestic look at a world in turmoil. “The later the song comes along in the making of the album, the more input they’ll have because I’ll be running out of ideas,” Liddiard says. Ultimately it’s all the same shit.

“I’ll come in with a bed of bones and go, ‘Right, make this sound good.’ But early on I’ll have concepts.”.

You can kind of run out of ideas.

If this were the 80's those labels like Bedroom Sucks or something like that, they would've been like waterfront or red eye making a nice living. I can’t see how it can change back now. It’s awful. Why did you choose that as the start of the record and where did it come from?

BUT… In the end, you gotta look on the bright side. And that’s the beauty, the beauty of humanity. Over the course of your career what is one of the most notable changes in the Australian Music scene you’ve witnessed? It's not tossing up new and interesting stuff as much as it used to, I mean you're only talking to me because they got behind us. At its close, the story has shifted from third person to the second person (‘you are living in a world …’).

That could be us. It does paint a “what the hell” sort of picture. With the release of Strange Tourist, the nascent negative reaction to what Liddiard does is directed at the wordy, ‘literary’ nature of the songs. Computers will do that to us.

Do you think patriotism is healthy or divisive? I don’t know why I come up with a certain song at a certain time. All the bad, all the good, you start comparing yourself. Gareth, you’ve faced death from several sides. We don't go out of fashion because we never go in fashion, you know? And now Trump’s going to throw that all away. But the praise is justified.

Is death something you often contemplate? I can get to Churchill in three and Stalin in four and that’s not unusual. At least Terminator has malice. Sorry, your blog cannot share posts by email.

I love the atmospherics. It does seem like Facebook either presents us at our best or our angriest.

Gareth Liddiard (born 20 November 1975) is an Australian musician, best known as a founding member of both The Drones and Tropical Fuck Storm. If you said to a soldier, that's a human being, kill it, there would be some uncertainty. I remember once upon a time you’d say “What do you think about what’s happening in the Senate?” And now you have to say “Well, I think” you have to give your take on it.

Any other comments?

Which is to exploit this land for Britannia Incorporated. Change ).

They’re all English, but English migrants to Brazil.

After their monumental 2008 record Havilah, it was hard to know where The Drones would go next. Which is great! Their structure is reminiscent of the Kevin Carmody song River of Tears, which is frequently covered by The Drones. Many times more remote, like Honolulu-level remoteness.

Their debut, A Laughing Death in Meatspace, is boiling with anger, loping on crazed beats, apocalyptic visions and sickening guitars. But you’re not allowed to say that in public. laughs.

And you want someone you can giggle with and he’s a funny, funny guy. ( Log Out /  But that tune is actually named after the CIA program called MK-Naomi which had something to do with spiking people with shellfish toxin to make them feel like shit. By the 1980s most jazz was kind of crap. It’s all just subconscious stuff.

Tropical Fuck Storm – wenn ein Name Programm ist!.

But The Drones is a solo thing anyway, it’s a platform for my arranging's, my neurosis. Explaining his songs and their origins, he’s aware of just how mad he can sound. “We used to do something similar called From Black to Communist, which is just one chord.

A Canary, Singing Through the Gas: Gareth Liddiard’s Strange Tourist. And I’ll go, “Wow, fuck I was writing about that and I didn’t even know it.” It was almost automatic. So I had my Boy Scouts of America shirt on. People of my generation are very used to constant surveillance not just from the state but from each other. Exactly! After Havilah, Liddiard made a stark, stunning acoustic record called Strange Tourist, that cemented him as Australia’s most important songwriter. One on one they’re mostly pretty cool. We could do totally avant garde noise, with the guitars, but you have still got to move yourself and move people. Yeah, it definitely won’t be cinematic if we’re wiped out or lose the race to A.I.

If I told you or a mate at the pub about it, you'd get bored pretty quick. The Drones needed a particular style of player – someone who could speak their musical language but also be diplomatic. Incidentally, the most comparable contemporaries to Liddiard are also from Melbourne: Glenn Richards and Ned Collette. Telefon Tel Aviv’s brutish, dark and lonely return.

He graduated from the University of Oregon and currently applies his silly trades in Houston. Paranoid. Your day- to-day, you become so used to it that no matter what you just say, “it’s whatever.”, Yeah, it’s just mundane.

When he and long term partner in crime Fiona Kitschin put Aussie rock institution The Drones on hiatus, they got even weirder with their next project. On the music side of things, I wanted to ask about the contrast on “Two Afternoons.” It’s another song with a weird change. The far Left are as responsible for Trump’s election win as the people who voted for him because the far Left alienated those voters (but the Left blames Russia even though Russia only interfered to make you all hate one another and start Civil War Two, not to secure a win for either the Republicans or the Democrats.

This modulation is part of what makes Liddiard a good storyteller, and perhaps what he has over the others: the ability to sustain a story. Then there's lots of legal drugs like anti-depressants and stimulants that we give kids in schools, like amphetamines and opiates. But the car made the horse redundant. The playing is often rude and impolite, ranging over unconventional scales, half-busted – it sounds instinctual, streamof-consciousness, drawing its energies and drive from that rambling chromaticism.

So we moved to Melbourne, it’s much better.

Yeah, that’s potentially where we’re headed.

We dig up all the fuckin' iron ore and grow all the sheep and wheat and we send it all to the mother company. His band mates in The Drones came in tow, first to Sydney, then to Melbourne. If you listen to the Drones you might go, “Wow, these people are a fucking drag,” but we had a rough time when we were young. Heads up, everyone. I get shat off by people younger than me judging each other so harshly all the time. The chaos begins with a song idea from Liddiard, who brings it to the band. My best friend who was in the Drones, he grew up in Rio. He has no truck, as he sings here, with ‘music made by millionaires for car adverts’. Is bad seafood something you’ve had problems with in the past? Normal life isn’t as boring as it feels. We grew up in Perth which is like a really small version of San Diego. Turns 20, Oeuvre: Hayao Miyazaki: Howl’s Moving Castle, From the Vaults of Streaming Hell: Stalked By My Doctor: The Return, From the Vaults of Streaming Hell: Deadcon. On a different day in a different place.

He won and the band took an enormous financial blow. I don’t know, it just had to go somewhere and it couldn’t go up any more. We’ve just accepted it. No way. If we don't do everything, we can't afford to do anything, it's less of a choice and more of something we have to do.

It brings me back to the line on “You Let My Tyres Down” “I snorted half a gram of Australia’s finest home-made coke.” You know, “finest home-made” is not a set of adjectives you usually have in front of coke. The quieter approach affords him detail and clarity that is hard to achieve with the band’s predisposition to noise.

Figure out our internal modus operandi. It's a chain of oppression, a system, if you looked at them like human beings. I'm not a mega political nerd, I think it's interesting but not in a deep political science way. And yeah, I don’t know why it ended up like that.

The music video that accompanied the movie—it wasn’t Boyz ’N the Hood—it was a movie called Colors! We acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land and pay our respects to Elders past, present and future. Europeans don't have a culture here because it's not our job. Just get the lyrics out. We were trying to figure out what each of us were meant to be doing while we were doing it.

The full version of this article is available to KYD Members. A lonely high-plains mailman. There’s an old story about Gareth Liddiard relocating to Australia’s east coast after growing up in the west. He is a singular guitarist – heavy on the attack, filled out with scratchy, fumbled, tumbledown notes. Think about your experiences in the year 12,749,487 BC- that is the same experience the future has in store for you.
