It became clear I had a film festival on my hands, it became clear I didn’t even bother with the other disciplines at that point.

As a 1st time director, I was totally shocked to learn of being awarded the Audience Award for Short Documentary! is a celebration of the visual and sonic frequencies that are contained within and spill out of Black ecstatic experiences.

The film sets out to tell the stories of Black women whose names have been unknown and whose stories have been untold, until now.

M.K.H: “ A film and visual culture journal, by critics of color about filmmakers of color.” Really trying to address what I feel like is a loss of contemporary analysis by BIPOC folks for BIPOC folks. Called “the Black Sundance,” the annual fest features African diaspora and Indigenous filmmakers. Needless to say, the British didn’t like being exposed and went out of their way to suppress the film.

Founded by Maori Karmael Holmes, who serves as artistic director and CEO of the festival has already accrued sizable support from across the country, from a prestigious list of financial backers that includes the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the John D. and Catherine T. “By Indie Means Necessary” serves as the tagline for BlackStar, and plays on the festival’s dedication to independent cinema in the spirit of late civil rights activist Malcolm X and his iconic “By Any Means Necessary” speech. Still, “Black Boy Joy” (2019) directed by Martina Mossell Lee and written by Michelle Sam. The film is part of the 2020 BlackStar Film Festival. There’s so much that we don’t know about the future of public events. Shantrelle Patrice Lewis’ debut feature “Daughters Of” honors the lives and legacies of the foremothers of Black women today, showcasing their stories, struggles, and lessons.

So I think back to those two moments are really important ones.

A powerful festival and an amazing community. We haven’t had that before, it’s been a contract basis since the beginning, the first year was a volunteer basis, and then it’s been a contract basis since then. After experiencing this once, I truly want to return every single year. I am interested in how moving online may make the experience more accessible for a wider audience this year.
