That those two factors appear together is not a coincidence, however, many people don’t know why this happens with regularity. If someone says it’s going to rain because they “feel it in their bones”, this might be the literal truth. Weather Questions: What Causes Low Pressure. As you learn about how low pressure systems affect weather, you may be able to forecast the weather and approaching rain on your own by watching a barometer. Low barometric pressure is known to aggravate a whole range of medical conditions ranging from migraines to arthritis. High-pressure systems typically have light clouds or no clouds at all, indicating fair weather without rain. Rapidly falling pressure indicates a storm is coming. Eventually the water vapor in the clouds condenses and falls as rain. Rising or steady pressure means continued fair weather.

More recently, however, a Dutch study of 222 people with osteoarthritis of the hip found that over 2 years, people said their pain and stiffness got worse with rising barometric pressure and humidity.

The presence of clouds indicates that rain may be present in the air. High winds and stormy seas did not, as it were, appear out of thin air, but followed patterns that can be analyzed, described, and predicted. Because of the rotation and shape of the earth and the rising and setting of the sun, different parts of the world are subjected to a variety of temperatures at any given time. “Convection” refers to a gas or liquid being forced upwards because it’s warmer than the surrounding medium. The lines on the map above are called isobars; the word “iso-” means “the same”, so these lines connect points with equal atmospheric pressure. Nor is it local: whether it snows in London depends on what the weather in New York was like a week ago. On a day-to-day basis, most parts of the world have fairly similar weather. The barometric pressure doesn’t have to change drastically to cause headaches, either. In high-pressure systems, the air sinks toward the Earth and warms upward, leading to dry and fair weather. Keeping an eye on your home barometer will give you a pretty good idea of what the sky is up to, but to really understand weather, you need to know something about low- and high-pressure systems. When the pressure is low, the air is free to rise into the atmosphere where it cools and condenses. “What we found in our studies was the environment is probably one of the most importanttriggers for migraine attacks, “ said Dr. Vince Martin, director of the Headache and Facial Pain Center at the University of Cincinnati Gardner Neuroscience Institute, during the 2019 Migraine World Summit. In general, a rising barometer means improving weather. Strangely enough, yet obvious when you think about it, is the phenomenon of atmospheric tides. More importantly, we all know that hot air rises.

The area within about 10° of the equator, for instance, receives a great deal of solar radiation, turning it into a permanent low-pressure zone. This is why when you see areas of low pressure, rain often follows. Rapidly falling pressure means that rain is likely, or snow if it is cold enough. Slowly falling pressure means little change in the weather.

The specific reading isn’t all that important in this regard; what matters most is in which direction the needle moves over the course of hours or days. Often, weather forecasters refer to high- or low-pressure areas moving toward particular regions in order to describe predicted conditions for those areas. Warm, moist air enters the area of low pressure and is pulled up and over the mass of cool air ahead of the warm front.

Think of it as “the weight of the air.” Barometric pressure is measured in several ways: inches of mercury (in-Hg), millibars (mb), or pounds per square inch (psi). Just like oceans, the atmosphere is attracted by the gravity of the sun and moon, meaning that barometric pressure rises and falls slightly every 12 and 24 hours. If someone says it’s going to rain because they “feel it in their bones”, this might be the literal truth. In a region of low pressure, the air rises. In North America, the most common unit of measurement is inches of mercury, but some others you might find on a barometer include: Average barometric pressure falls with altitude, and the boiling point of water decreases along with air pressure. The air pressure at sea level at a temperature of 59°F (15°C) is equal to one atmosphere (Atm) and this is the baseline reading for determining relative pressure. The air that surrounds the Earth creates atmospheric pressure and this pressure is determined by the collective weight of air molecules. These discoveries are used to predict the weather today. This is the situation that produces the most severe thunderstorms and the shorter, heavier downpours that are seen commonly in the spring and summer in many areas. The Art and Science of Weather Prediction. As that cycle of fluctuating pressure is powered by variations in temperature, the areas of high and low pressure move around.

The wind moves pressure systems and these systems tend to change as they pass over mountains, oceans, and other areas. To state this a little more precisely, the density of a gas decreases as the temperature goes up. For example, a weather map may feature a line connecting all points where the pressure is 996 mb and a line below that where the pressure is 1,000 mb.
