Teacher, administrator, educational psychologist and academic leader, Inez Beverly Prosser made a mark in education in the 1930s. Prairie View is a member of the Texas A&M University System, and in its 135-year history, nearly 60,000 academic degrees have been awarded. Prairie View A&M University was established in 1876 during the Reconstruction Period after the Civil War.

Inez Beverly Prosser, teacher and administrator and one of the first black women to receive a Ph.D. in the United States, the oldest daughter of eleven children of Samuel Andrew and Veola (Hamilton) Beverly, was born in Yoakum, Texas, in 1897.

Inez Beverly Prosser (1895-1934), was an African American psychologist of the early twentieth century. Often regarded as the first black female psychologist, Inez Beverly Prosser earned her doctorate from the University of Cincinnati in 1933. Her dissertation, completed in 1933, examined personality differences in black children attending either voluntarily segregated or integrated schools and concluded that black children were better served in segregated schools. When Inez Beverly Prosser received her Ph.D. in psychology in 1933, she became the first Black female psychologist. She studied how racially integrated and racially segregated schools impact African American youth. Her dissertation, The Non-Academic Development of Negro Children in Mixed and Segregated Schools, was an important work in that it explored differences between African American students at integrated schools and segregated schools.
