The Mary Seacole Trust brings together people from the public, private and not-for-profit sectors, including the Armed Forces and the NHS. The project received “The Claimant’s Solicitors: Rehabilitation Initiative of the Year Award” from First Rehabilitation in 2012 and 2013. I joined the NHS in 1973. Mary Seacole, a Jamaican Scottish nurse and businesswoman, was a celebrated Victorian heroine due to her bravery in nursing soldiers in the Crimean War (1853–1856). Funding was lost when the GLC was abolished and so I moved to a post in the information department at the college lecturers’ union Natfhe. I joined the board of Mary Seacole Memorial Statue Appeal in 2011 and in my capacity as a previous Non-Executive Director of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Foundation Trust (GSTT) (1999 – 2007) and a member of the GSTT Council of Governors (2009 -2015) have been an instrumental link between the Mary Seacole Trustees and GSTT, in organising events to raise awareness amongst GSTT Staff and building community support for the statue.
