The accident reports and ILAFFT sections of magazines like Pilot and Flyer are always the bits I turn to first, and this book is sort of an extended version of those. A very dry book, a little hard to get through sometimes, and more than a little repetitive in places, but nevertheless vital reading for students or newly qualified pilots.

Mr. Craig delivers a neat, effective package of what is essentially aviation-themed horror stories. Use the Amazon App to scan ISBNs and compare prices. Useful, worth a read, but written in a repetitive and tiring manner with shady statistics. Reading this book should be the first thing you do after you pass your check ride. Its a sad tale of men in uniform attempting to do their duty within the constraints of strict rules, regulations & boundaries that can never be crossed upon peril of official retribution.

I really enjoyed this book, it was a well written book without all the padding that often happens in books like this, if you are interested in Northern Ireland and the British Army, you will enjoy this read. It's a great statistical guide to the dangers of overconfidence in flying. The author posits that there is a "killing zone" in which most pilot fatalities happen, based on NTSB accident statistics.
The 40-question test at the end is interesting - I tend more to the higher end of the scale, meaning I don’t have the typical pilot personality - which is not necessarily a bad thing; I’m more likely to do the checks and make a decision not to fly in borderline weather conditions - but it also means I may not gain as much experience in dealing with more difficult conditions, unless I push myself a bit more. Therefore, they say little about the risk that you yourself face as your flight experience increases. He is the author of Pilot in Command; Be a Better Pilot; Stalls & Spins; Multiengine Flying, 3rd Edition; and Controlling Pilot Error – Situation Awareness and Light Airplane Navigation Essentials. It's a bit of a sweeping generalisation and necessarily a good fit for private pilots - the books intended audience. I wrote the first edition of the book in 2000 and it covered general aviation accidents from 1983 (the first year I became a flight instructor) to 1999.

An interesting thesis and great accident accounts, but a little too much statistical voodoo for my taste to earn the fifth star. After leaving the army in 1985 he joined the RUC, but left in 1990 after a near-fatal car crash.
This book needed to be written. It is my sincere hope that the information, tips and techniques of the book save lives and make flying fun, exciting and safe - no matter what statistical calculations are applied! A must read for pilots both new and experienced.
