If a player knows the conditions on how AI Melia acts though, she's potentially decent if the player does a bunch of micromanaging but even then that kind of counts as a person controlling Melia. Question about missable quests/items/etc. Everyone who posts here is a paragon of humanity.
Riki it'll depend on how you want to make him, as he can play many roles like offense, Ether, tank, healer, etc.

Shulk, Dunban, Reyn is a pretty good party as it is super offensive and has great chains. Maybe give him some aggro up if you can.
If you get all the weight down skills, you can have Dunban trotting around in full heavy armour with no reprecussions. Agility Up gems will help him avoid even more. He has access to fantastic Arts like Worldly Slash and Peerless, which makes him great when teamed up with Shulk and Dunban.

I swap my party around all the time for fun, but whenever I run into something that's giving me trouble Shulk/Reyn/Dunban has been the A team so far. I honestly don't feel there is a wrong setup but for harder bosses you may wanna throw in sharla or riki for extra healing.

My problem with the AI is that if there is a condition on Break, Topple or Daze (Dunban's Break, Melia's Topple, Sharla's Daze -> Head Shot for example) the AI will never do it. A generic first play through setup is Shulk with Dunban as an agility tank and Riki as a healer/debuffer but if you follow the main formula of DPS/Healer/Tank anything works really. Blinding Blossom is a great art for this, since it kills two birds in one stone, dropping someone else's aggro while simultaneously rising his own. Shulk/Dunban/Reyn is pretty much universally considered the best party for most of the game because they kill everything the fastest and don't require much healing at all. Ai is not changed in de unfortunately but if you want a way to sorta fix melia's Ai. Right, right.
Dunban can absorb aggro from the third party member and if things get dicey he can lose all of his aggro with one of his auras which then switches it to Riki usually. (Please no spoilers past Alcamoth). (possible spoilers).

Agility is a much more static stat throughout the game than any other stat, and even very few points in agility means a lot, so just because the number is a lot lower than the other stats doesn't mean the effect isn't just as high.
